Madison+Main’s Weekly Report – 03/20/15 – “4.9%”

Hey folks,

“There are lies, damned lies and statistics.” – Mark Twain. It’s one of my favorite quotes and numbers have always fascinated me. 4.9% could be a great thing. 4.9% could be a terrible thing. It depends on how you look at it. Getting a loan from the bank at 4.9% is awesome. Having my NCAA Bracket rank at 4.9% is just plain sad. We tried to do everything by the numbers this week at Madison+Main, and in this weeks report I am going to throw out some fascinating statistics… write me back and tell me which ones you believe. :)

On a personal note, I’m sorry I didn’t send you an e-mail last week but I was in Brooklyn cheering on my beloved VCU Rams, where they won the A10 Championship. They lost last night but the entire Ram Nation is looking forward to next year. #havoc #shakatheworld #goramsgo

Statistic: After 6 years, Shaka Smart’s win percentage as a head coach is .744 percent. Coach Mike Krzyzewski had a win percentage of .370 in his sixth year.

Madison+Main’s Weekly Report – 03/06/15 – Awareness

Hey folks,

This week I tried to remind people that “awareness drives response”. Things may come and go in the marketing biz. Technologies may disrupt business. But through it all, one adage remains…Awareness Drives Response. I made a video about it here.

But it becomes harder and harder each year to make people aware of things. TV’s have 500 channels now instead of 3. People aren’t reading newspapers and magazines as much as they used to. And everyone I know under the age of 50 has his or her nose glued to a smartphone. How do you make people aware of your product when most people aren’t even aware of their surroundings? The answer lies in one word: boldness. Bold Brands Win, and we proved it again this week.

Madison+Main’s Weekly Report – 2/27/15 “Frozen”

Hey folks,

Maybe it’s February. Maybe it’s the weather. Maybe it’s because my beloved VCU Rams lost in double OT the other night. But whatever it is, I was feeling a little “crusty” this week. Walking out of the Robins Center at University of Richmond Wednesday night, I saw a little boy singing the Frozen hit “Do you want to build a snowman?” I told him “No.”  Normally I’m an optimist, so this is unfamiliar territory for me. Luckily for you, I turned that frown upside down and we got a lot of things done this week at your favorite Richmond-based Marketing, PR and Branding company. Let’s take a look at the week that was…

Monday, February 23rd – At the MMMMM (Madison+Main Monday Morning Meeting) I was able to brag on my lovely, talented first-born daughter Hattie, who led her show choir with a win in the Clover Hill Mid-Atlantic Invitational and super proud that she was named Best Performer. The trophy has been sitting on the dinning room table like a centerpiece all week. #proudpapa.

On Monday we welcomed Caroline Lea from Trinity High School who was forced to spend a terrible, real world week at Madison+Main. Just kidding. We were delighted to have Caroline as a temporary Madison+Main-iac this week.

Unfortunately I didn’t get to spend any time with Caroline because Casey and I were working on site with the Dragas Companies in VA Beach, and had a great meeting with Sally Horvath and Breyana Baggett (ironically Breyana spent some time at Madison+Main shadowing us a few years ago and now we get to work with her). #smallworld.

Madison+Main’s Weekly Report – 2/20/15 “28 Days Til Spring”

Hey folks,

I figured you could use some good news this week, so I counted it up and I am happy to tell you there are only 28 days til Spring. Yes I’m an optimist, even when my car tells me that it is 1 degree outside. We had our fair share of cold and snow and ice this week, but somehow we managed to get a ton of things done. The Arctic Blast created a few setbacks, but the guys and gals at Madison+Main are a hearty bunch.

Madison+Main’s Weekly Report – 2/13/15 “Questions and Answers”

Hey folks,

Week in and week out, I ask questions and people ask me questions. The answers that I provide are an integral part of the work that we do. But this week, I found myself answering lots of other questions. Very, very interesting questions…

Monday, February 9th – When you use social media apps like Foursquare you can “check in” to places. Prior to my breakfast presentation at the Henrico Business Leaders meeting Monday morning, I checked into the Westin HotelFacebook reported that my friend Mark Creery (CEO of Data Directions) and I checked into the hotel together. I got some interesting questions about that. The presentation went well and I got some good questions from the crowd. I also got two really nice thank you cards later in the week. One from New York Life’s Greer Johnson, and another from Dennis Bickmeier, President of Richmond International Raceway.

We get lots of Thank You cards. #love

Madison+Main’s Weekly Report 2/6/15 – “This is a sign we should work together.”

Hey folks,

Madison+Main got a lot of attention this week. I was on the local news Monday talking about the “best and worst” Super Bowl ads. Monday’s Richmond Times-Dispatch had an article in it where we announced three new clients (Madison+Main Hits a Triple) and we announced two new hires; Cassie and Madalyn. Our friends at Keith Fabry Reprographics installed a giant sign on the side of our building.

Perhaps, “This is a sign we should work together.”

Madison+Main’s Weekly Report – 1/30/15 “I Will Wait, I Will Wait For You”

Hey folks,

I have always been a very impatient person. Some see that as a character flaw, but I see it as a fundamental key to success. In other words, I don’t have time to wait. I like to get things done. Perhaps that’s why I like working with small to midsize companies, where you can talk to real people and not have to wait months to get feedback or a decision. We have been more “doing” than “waiting” this week at Madison+Main, and I am excited to share the news with you.

The thing I am most proud of? We successfully changed the music on our phone system and it now plays Mumford & Sons’ “I will wait, I will wait for you“. Yes, when you call Madison+Main at 804-521-4141 and we put you on hold you will hear “I will wait, I will wait for you”. #nopunintended

Madison+Main’s Weekly Report 1/23/15 – Apparently I’m THAT Guy

Hey folks,

Last week, I MC’d the Chesterfield Chamber Annual Gala… and the reviews are still pouring in. Most of those in attendance laughed at my jokes, but I heard a couple of local politicians were not amused by my witty barbs. #sorrysenator On Friday, I was introduced as “that guy” who wore a dress at the Chamber Gala and made everyone laugh. I’m okay with being “that guy”. Maybe it’s part of my personal brand. I’m loud. I joke around a lot and I get a lot of attention. I’m 47 and perhaps I’ve finally come to terms with it.

I am not, however “that guy” who takes off his clothes and jumps in the James River for a good cause, but I am “that guy” that helps to promote these events. Keep Virginia Beautiful will hold “Shiver in the River” on Saturday, January 31st. Drop by Historic Tredegar Ironworks, and take the plunge.

Madison+Main’s Weekly Report – Excuse Me While I Slip Into Something… 1/16/15

Hey folks,

Today’s Weekly Report comes to you from Derek Fair, a bright, young VCU Mass Comm graduate, who is interning at Madison+Main. Derek drew the short straw and had to type the copy while I slipped behind the wheel on a three-hour drive towards Winchester. I am spending the day with the leadership and marketing teams at First Bank, as we plan a lot of exciting things for 2015. Instead of wearing a suit, I decided to take full advantage of “Casual Friday.” Today, it’s jeans, penny loafers, and my Hugh Hefner Smoking Jacket.

Last night, at the Chesterfield Chamber Annual Gala, I was in a dress and a blonde wig. Keep reading… the report gets better.

Madison+Main’s Weekly Report – M.I.A. 1/9/15

Hey folks,

After a two week hiatus, the Weekly Report is back. I haven’t been “missing in action,” I’ve just been “fat and happy.” I guess that means my New Year’s resolution is to be “skinny and unhappy.” 2015 is here and there is a renewed sense of purpose in the air. It was tough to get back to work after the lay off, but I am thrilled to start wearing some of the cool clothes I got for Christmas… like 12 pairs of Tommy Hilfiger socks.

When I was a kid, I didn’t like getting socks for Christmas.

I am going to lose 10 pounds before next Thursday, so I can fit into my Zoot Suit style tuxedo. I am hosting the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce Gala on January 15th and I can promise you there will be plenty of corny jokes and a few mildly inappropriate zingers. Registration closes today! Get your tickets now.
