Madison+Main’s Weekly Report – 12/19/14 – Merry Christmas!

Hey folks,

Geoff and Lindsey put together the Weekly Report this week. I know it’s going to be some ridiculous photo of me, probably in a Santa Suit, and I will be as surprised as you are when I see it in my Inbox.

I couldn’t let the year end without saying Merry Christmas to you. Thanks for reading the Madison+Main Weekly Report and Happy New Year!

Madison+Main’s Weekly Report 12/12/14 – It’s a Marathon, not a sprint.

Hey folks,

As we sat down to enjoy the Christmas feast last year, my buddy Glen Plomchok said “Remember, it’s a marathon, not a sprint.” I laughed because we staring at a ridiculous buffet table, complete with 7 bone Rib Roast, Ham, Turkey and all the fixins. The phrase stuck with me and I’ve used it a lot this year.   Life is a marathon, not a sprint. The holiday season is also a marathon, so don’t feel like you have to sprint to December 25th. #paceyourself I got away from the hustle and bustle last weekend, and attended the VCU game last Saturday and the Redskins game last Sunday. Both lost. #sheesh   Special thanks to Marc Chimento at Hy Tech Property for hooking me and Will Shewmake up with a sweet suite at the Skins game. Normally at a Skins game I have to wait in line 20 minutes to go to the restroom. I was so excited to have a restroom all to myself that I took a selfie. Midlothian-based Hy Tech was founded in 1985 and fixes a whole bunch of stuff for companies. I wished Hy Tech could fix the Redskins’ Offensive Line.

Madison+Main’s Weekly Report – 12/12/14 – It’s the most wonderful time of the year

Hey Folks,

According to Lite98Easy 100.9 and Sirius XM’s Joy Channel 17, “it’s the hap-happiest season of all, with those holiday greetings and gay happy meetings when friends come to call…” The holiday party season is upon us and that reminds me, our holiday party is next Thursday and the theme is “Island Casual”.  #NoAndyWilliamsSweatersAllowed.   Madison+Main is a busy beehive of activity and I just broke out my Santa jacket, so I could wear it to all of the parties.
Monday, December 1st – Although it’s the season of giving, I found myself in an unusual position on Monday. A business acquaintance asked for my assistance five weeks ago. She asked if I would connect her to some investors to get her business idea off the ground. She dropped off a nice bottle of Eagle Rare bourbon, after she made the request. I shopped the idea around, but alas, no takers. Her response? She wanted her bourbon back. I laughed, but she was serious. Who drops off a bottle of nice bourbon at an ad agency and expects it to remain unopened for a month? Nevertheless, I stroked a check Monday to repay her for the gift. #JawDrops, #WTF.Another friend, LeClair Ryan partner Will Shewmake, called me Monday and invited me to see the Redskins play this weekend. I am quite confident this time that the tickets are a gift and he won’t ask me to pay for them next month. #FingersCrossed

Madison+Main’s Weekly Report 11/28/14 – Gobble Gobble

Hey folks,

It looks like we all made it through Turkey Week, a little heavier than last week perhaps, but I hope you all had your fill of food, friends and family. I’m writing this week’s Weekly Report at the Chipotle in Charleston, South Carolina, by myself, huddled in a corner, desperate to eat anything other than turkey and hiding from the hoards of Black Friday shoppers. This year shops were open on Thanksgiving and I heard several reporters refer to it as “Brown Thursday,” so I figured “Why stop there?” I’m going to give every day of the week a color. That’s how we roll at Madison+Main.

Everyone wore black in honor of Black Friday, but Geoff refused to do the Sorority pose.

Madison+Main’s Weekly Report – 11/21/14 – Celebrate Success

Hey folks,

A number of years ago I made a list of ten things I think that people need to do in order to be successful. Number 10 on that list is “Celebrate Success.” I think it’s important to have fun and mark milestones with your colleagues. Sometimes we get very busy and fail to do that. But this week we had a lot to celebrate, so we did. 🙂 (If you’d like me to send you my Top 10 Tips for Success, just email me back and I’ll send you a free copy.)

Last Sunday I was pressed into service as Lay Worship Leader at Brandermill Church. It looks like an important job. I have to wear a suit and I stand at the pulpit and say things like, “Let us stand as you are able and join in our call to worship.” When our preacher, Reverend Brooks, asked the congregation to share the good news, I told him that I launched a new Cheesecake business with some partners. His response? “That’s wonderful news David. Did you bring me some cheesecake?”

Madison+Main’s Weekly Report 11/14/14 – #CheesecakeLove

Hey folks,

This week I’ve travelled all three corners of the Commonwealth and today I am at the top, visiting our friends at First Bank. I’ve worked with First Bank’s CEO Scott Harvard in one way or another since 2007

and his team are always fun to work with. Click here to see a video of Scott and COO Dennis Dysart shaving their heads for charity after First Bank employees raised over $30,000 for United Way of Northern Shenandoah Valley. Last weekend I was in the Eastern part of the state at Virginia’s largest party, the 57th Annual Urbanna Oyster Festival. It was good to get away with friends, drink some beer and eat some oysters. I now have a better idea of what I want to do in retirement. I think I am going to move to Urbanna, raise their population from 471 to 473 (I’ll bring Sue with me) and become an Oyster farmer #Awshucks

This week it was all about the cheesecake, no treble. I’m bringing #CheesecakeLove back.

Madison+Main’s Weekly Report 11/07/14 – Don’t take life too seriously

Hey Folks,

“People are taking their comedians seriously and their politicians as a joke,” American humorist, Will Rogers said a long time ago.  With half of young Americans getting their news from cable comedy shows and this week’s election results, I thought of this amazing quote. It also reminded me that we shouldn’t take life too seriously. I’ve been on a real serious streak lately and I took a few opportunities this week to “let my hair down.” I had received several pieces of bad news prior to my birthday and had been increasingly anxious about getting old, so on Halloween I decided to act like a teenager again. I love Halloween. I love that my birthday is on Halloween. And I love the fact that I could dress up as Ron Burgundythe Anchorman (without pants).

For Halloween I dressed as Ron Burgundy.

Madison+Main’s Weekly Report 10/31/14 – Boo!

Hey Folks,

I was born on Halloween and I’ve always been a bit of a prankster. I like the trick more than the treat. So, I started this week thinking of clever ways to spook coworkers, friends, family members, and even CQLfootball officials. Last Saturday, during the Alberta Sharks last game of the season, I figured we had nothing to lose. Sitting 0-7 and about to fall to 0-8, I informed the referee that we would be running a “trick play.”  Apparently my acting was so good, when I asked the quarterback to hand me the ball, the Ref blew his whistle and thought it was an “equipment time out”. We fooled the other team. We fooled the crowd. We fooled the other coaches. But the “fool” who was refereeing the game forgot… and ruined the play. Trust me, it would’ve been a YouTube sensation.

Madison+Main’s Weekly Report 10/24/14 – Life Doesn’t Have a Pause Button

Hey Folks,

Maybe it’s because I have another birthday approaching, but several things gave me pause this past week. It’s a busy time of year between networking events, client meetings, football practice four nights a week and weekly ceremonies at the high school for my daughter (honors society, beta society, ring ceremony etc). It’s hard to find time to take a few moments and reflect on things; accomplishments, friendships, obstacles etc. Sometimes I wish life had a pause button.

I was saddened to learn this week that my friend and colleague, Jack Hartmann, passed away after complications he suffered from undergoing a third back surgery recently. Jack was a very talented and dedicated pro whose legacy looms large for those in the RVA production community and the friends he has left behind. News of Jack’s death was unexpected and hit especially hard for me. We worked on a lot of projects together, but it never felt like work… we laughed a lot and we’re the same age, 46. (For those of you who didn’t have the pleasure of meeting him, you can learn more about the man here and more about his work here.)

So I took a little time this week to reflect on things, but life goes on.
